Average Handling Time (AHT) Calculator
Calculate average handling time using total talk time, hold time, after-call work and the number of handled contacts. Use figures from the same reporting period to understand the average time spent handling each contact.
How to use this AHT calculator
1. Gather matching totals
Choose a reporting period and collect the total talk time, hold time, after-call work and handled contact count for the same group of contacts. Enter totals rather than averages. Ensure talk time excludes the hold time and after-call work you enter separately.
2. Enter the time components
Enter each duration using the hours, minutes and seconds boxes. For example, 500 total minutes should be entered as 8 hours and 20 minutes. Keep the minutes and seconds portions below 60. Leave unused boxes blank, and enter 0 in one box when a component has no recorded time.
3. Add your contact count and optional target
Enter the number of handled contacts represented by your time totals. If you want a comparison, enter your team’s maximum desired AHT per contact in the target fields. Leave all target fields blank to calculate without a comparison.
4. Calculate and interpret the result
Select “Calculate AHT” to see the average handling time per contact, the component breakdown and any difference from your target. Download the CSV to keep the result. Review AHT alongside quality and resolution outcomes; a shorter handling time does not automatically mean better service.
